Freight challenge to England’s Burton-Leicester passenger plan

The UK infrastructure agency, Network Rail, has announced a revised plan for the Ivanhoe Line, a historic route that could link several communities (principally Coalville, Ashby and Burton) with Derby. The reopening project, which still needs governmental approval, does not include plans for reinstating passenger services, leaving some of England’s biggest communities isolated from rail. According to Network Rail, the fact that freight trains use regional infrastructure heavily burdens the reintroduction of passenger trains on the line.
