RZD and Russian Mail launched a special mail wagon to deliver parcels and letters from Saint Petersburg to Kaliningrad. Inhabitants of Kaliningrad will receive their mail from Saint Petersburg one and a half times faster than before, according to RZD. Until now all mail was shipped via Moscow.

According to RZD, the wagon has space for 2000 parcels. The mail car will be part of the passenger trains 79 and 80 and will run once a week. The journey takes a little over a day. The train will not only deliver mail and parcels from Saint Petersburg, but also from other regions of Southwest Russia, namely Novgorod, Pskov and Karelia.

Trains 79 and 80 pass through Belarus and Lithuania before reaching Kaliningrad. Rail transport from Russia to the exclave can only take place via Lithuania. Hence why the European Commission decided in July that rail freight transit to Kaliningrad will be an exemption to the ban on Russian transport through the European Union.

RZD says it’s the first time a mail car as part of a passenger train will deliver parcels directly from Saint Petersburg to Kaliningrad.
