François Davenne has officially started as the new Director General of the International Union of Railways (UIC). His new function became effective per 1 July. The Frenchman succeeds Jean-Pierre Loubinoux after more than ten years of service.

The new chief of the overarching railway body was already presented at the UIC General Meeting in Madrid last July. In January this year he joined UIC as Deputy Director General for a smooth follow-up of his predecessor Jean-Pierre Loubinoux.

Active in rail

Davenne says he wants to focus on the image of the rail sector in general and the consolidation of the position of the rail as “the backbone of smart and clean mobility.”

He previously worked at, among others, the French Ministry of Transport where he was responsible for rail regulation and safety. In 2012, he was elected General Secretary of OTIF, the intergovernmental organisation for international rail transport. Until 2018, his main task was to bring parties together to develop uniform international rules for rail transport.
