Port of Rotterdam to get bundle of six 740-metre train tracks

The Port of Rotterdam will get new rail infrastructure, consisting of a bundle of six tracks suitable for 740-metre trains. The new tracks will be built at the Maasvlakte, at the far western side of the port. Construction partner Swietelsky plans to finish the project by mid-2027.

The infrastructure expansion is necessary to enable rail freight transport growth from the port into the European hinterland, says the Port of Rotterdam. It is supposed to mitigate capacity bottlenecks.

“A reliable and competitive rail freight product is indispensable for Rotterdam’s position in the European hinterland. Container throughput at the Port of Rotterdam is set to grow steadily over the coming years”, the Port of Rotterdam says.

“To continue transporting the increasing flow of containers efficiently to the hinterland, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, [infrastructure manager] ProRail and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management are investing in sustainable and efficient rail development.”

Swietelsky will start working on the rail track bundle, which is financed with the help of a Connecting Europe Facility subsidy, in early 2025.
