Voestalpine Railway Systems Jez has been tasked with the supply and transport of track devices for the standard gauge connection of Hupac’s La Llagosta terminal in Barcelona with the Mediterranean Corridor. The Spanish manufacturer will provide 27 mixed-gauge turnouts, three additional ones for standard gauge as well as four high-speed expansion devices.

This was highlighted by Spanish infrastructure manager Adif, which awarded the tender for the project, which should take roughly two years for a total investment of 7,5 million euros. Turnouts are the movable pieces of track, activated with a switch, that allow a train to change direction without stopping. Expansion devices absorb the effects of temperature variations on track sections that cannot withstand the stresses transmitted by rail bars.

The contract won by Voestalpine Railway Systems Jez includes the manufacturing, pre-assembly, workshop testing, and transport of the items. Moreover, the company will provide its expertise during the various phases of the project, from laying the tracks to the final integration of the devices into the interlocking system.

The facility is located fifteen kilometres from Barcelona and is currently undergoing a major transformation to be adapted to European standards and become part of the TEN-T Mediterranean Corridor. In November 2022, Adif awarded the contract for the new security and telecommunications system, which should be ready by the end of 2024 for an investment of 17,4 million euros. This contract was won by Temporary Union of Enterprises formed by Siemens Rail Automation and FCC Industrial and Energy Infrastructures.

Moreover, in January, Adif launched a tender to select the company that will manage the La Llagosta terminal. In June, it was reported that Swiss giant Hupac might be the frontrunner for the position together with TPNova. Their proposal seemed to be more appealing than the ones presented by the competitor: VIIA and a consortium comprising Renfe, Duisport, and Kombiverkehr. The Hupac-TPNova consortium was officially appointed as terminal manager in July.
