Spain awards another contract for Algeciras-Bobadilla upgrade
The Spanish Ministry of Transport (MITMA) assigned a contract for 13.2 million euros for the renovation of the rail section between Almoraima and San Pablo de Buceite. This initiative is part of the project for the Algeciras-Bobadilla line, a starting point for both the Mediterranean and Atlantic TEN-T Corridors from Spain’s largest port. With this tender, 70 per cent of the investments for the Algeciras-Bobadilla upgrade have been deployed, MITMA said.
The tender, put out in September 2021, was won by Comsa, a Spanish company specialised in infrastructure construction. The actions, which need to be completed in ten months, include the renovation of three bridges and one viaduct, the construction of two new overpasses and a study for noise reduction. Moreover, the track and platform configuration will be remodelled at the Jimena de la Frontera station.
Algeciras-Bobadilla upgrade
Another key project here is the implementation of a third, mixed gauge track between Bobadilla and Ronda. The upgrade of the line between Bobadilla and Ronda also entails adapting the size of the overpasses to the future electrification of the line, reinforcing the infrastructure and other points of the route, and the drainage system. For these actions, tenders for 62,8 million euros have already been put out by Adif.
Other than the tender for the Bobadilla-Ronda line, Adif is working on the upgrade of the Ronda-Algeciras as well. In June, the Spanish IM said it would invest 18,3 million euros to upgrade the existing infrastructure along this line. Implementing a third track to accommodate standard gauge traffic shall boost rail transport of semi-trailers along the rolling highway between Algeciras and Zaragoza. However, the opening of this infrastructure has recently been indefinitely postponed.
