Adif presents study results for new Granada railway variant
Last week, María Luisa Domínguez, president of Spanish infrastructure manager Adif and Xavier Flores, General Secretary of Infrastructures of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, presented the results of the study on the Granada-Almería section, part of the corridor connecting the south coast of Spain by rail.
This railway line should create a valid alternative to road freight transportation. This is because transit times for rail transportation will be significantly reduced and therefore more appealing.
The rail projects in Andalusia
The total investment for the Granada-Almería section exceeds 615 million euros. The section is part of the Antequera-Granada-Almería line of the TEN-T Mediterranean Corridor. The project includes the switch to European standard gauge, the electrification of the line, and the implementation of advanced signaling and communication systems.
An additional 307 million euros will be allocated for renovation works on four sections, which should reduce transit time even further. The sections involved are Iznalloz–Moreda, Moreda–Huélago, Huélago–Benalúa and Fiñana–Gérgal.
Moreover, the study confirmed the compatibility of the infrastructure with the possible reopening of the freight rail transport service for the Alquife mines, in Almería. Finally, the study proposed the execution of the Moreda variant to prevent the passage of goods close to the city. For the Moreda variant, the estimated costs revolve between 292 and 456 million euros.
