P&O Ferrymasters is extending its logistics capabilities with the order of a new fleet of telematics-equipped semi-trailers which are fully equipped for the European rail freight market. It has signed a deal with Schmitz Cargobull who will provide 200 multimodal TrailerConnect trailers.

The 1,111th semi-trailer has now rolled off the Schmitz assembly line, equipped with the trailer telematics system, and strengthens the long-standing partnership between the two firms, which has also seen all P&O Ferrymasters’ trailers equipped with the system since 2015.

‘Smart’ trailers

Of the 200 semi-trailers now ordered, 75 are configured and equipped as COIL versions and 125 as universal semi-trailers. All are intended for combined transport operations. Telematics-equipped – or ‘smart’ – trailers enable each component and activity, from braking to tyre wear to refrigeration, to be closely monitored using various sensors and controlled via an ‘app’.

Bas Belder, Managing Director of P&O Ferrymasters, said: “Our primary concern is to support our customers in their daily work and to continue to consolidate our high customer loyalty over a number of years. Our focus is therefore on even greater improved efficiency in the planning and capacity utilisation of our fleet.”

Innovative

Boris Billich, Sales Director with Schmitz Cargobull, added: “It is important for us to be able to offer our customers the best semi-trailers with the most efficient equipment, which enhances their work with the most innovative technical telematics solutions and associated services.”
