Slovenian Parliament gives final approval for Divača-Koper doubling

The Slovenian Parliament officially approved the project to double the Divača-Koper railway line. Construction works for the second track leading into the country’s largest port in Koper should start in 2026 and be concluded by 2030.

The new Divača-Koper line has already been under construction, but the initial plan entailed only a single track. However, at the beginning of 2023, the decision to lay a second track was brought forward and has now been finally approved by the Slovenian Parliament. Just as for the first track, which should be ready by 2025, the infrastructure will be managed by state-owned entity 2TDK, created especially for this project.

The project should reportedly cost around 354 million euros, with the European Investment Bank covering the majority with 250 million euros. During the voting session which led to the approval of the doubling project, the environmental concerns brought up by Slovenia’s neighbour Italy were also discussed and resolved. Once the whole infrastructure is in place, estimates claim that a whopping 24 million tonnes of cargo to and from the Slovenian port of Koper, will be able to be transported via rail rather than on trucks.
