Budapest to get two new rail freight connections

Two rail freight services serving the Hungarian capital Budapest, both suitable for the transportation of non-cranable semi-trailers, are being introduced over the next few months. One, launched by Helrom, will start today 2 October 2024, while the second one, led by CFL multimodal, is expected to start operations in the first quarter of next year.

The more imminent service, the one operated by Helrom, will connect Budapest with Düsseldorf, in northwestern Germany. “Daily departures are planned in both directions six days a week”, the company said. From Hungary, it will be possible to catch cargo in the areas of Slovakia and Romania as well. From Düsseldorf, on the other hand, cargo can be attracted from the Ruhr region in Germany, the Benelux area as well as Great Britain.

The second service involves CFL multimodal, the MAHART Container Center (MCC) terminal in Budapest and VTG Hungary, as the Association of Hungarian Logistic Service Centres stated. The connection will be between CFL’s terminal in Bettembourg-Dudelange and the MCC. “This train is foreseen to start in Q1 2025 and to run four times a week, transporting both containers and semi-trailers”, the association said on LinkedIn. CFL multimodal is trying to increase its presence in this area of Eastern Europe, as the recent launch of a service to Curtici (Romania) shows.
