Rhenus Logistics to build container terminal in Aktau port by 2030

German company Rhenus Logistics is planning to build a new container terminal in the Kazakh port city of Aktau by 2030. It also signed a contract for an Uzbek joint venture to implement a logistics centre in the town of Andijon.

The company signed a letter of intent with Aktau port authorities for the construction of a new intermodal container terminal at the Caspian Sea shore. The port is a key node of the cross-Eurasian Middle Corridor.

Rhenus plans to build the terminal by 2030. “The Eurasian Corridor is not only an internationally important trade route that contributes to the EU’s diversification strategy, but also a decisive lever for the global economy”, the company’s CEO Tobias Bartz explains.

“With our investments in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, which are supported by the governments of these states as well as the German government, we are strengthening the regional infrastructure and the position of German industry and the local export economy on the global market”, he says.

Project elsewhere along the Middle Corridor

As for the latter, Rhenus Logistics signed a contract for the establishment of a joint venture with Uzbek container operator O’ztemiryo’lkonteyner. “On this basis, concrete plans for a modern logistics centre in Andijon are to be implemented”, the company says. Andijon is another important hub on the China – Europe route.

Rhenus Logistics references its other “strategic measures” in the Caucasus region and Turkey as steps that will facilitate the growth of the Middle Corridor. The company’s steps, it says, “will enable the development of a seamless supply chain along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, the so-called Middle Corridor between Europe and China via Central Asia.”
